In 1982 the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 517 Petawawa, commissioned a signature march from Canadian composer and former PLCB director, Dr. James McDonald Gayfer (1916-1997). "Doc" Gayfer wrote a lively quick march he called "Petawawa Five-Seventeen", which received its debut performance in June 1982 at the annual Petawawa Civic Centre Days' concert, under the guest direction of Gayfer himself.

"Petawawa Five-Seventeen" soon became the "signature tune" of the Petawawa Legion Community Band, and can now be heard at the close of all their public concerts.

In honour of the Band's 25th anniversary in January 2003, "unofficial" lyrics were written and performed at the ceremonies in the Legion Hall on Saturday, January 25, 2003. These lyrics follow.

PETAWAWA LEGION FIVE-SEVENTEEN

Gather ‘round and hear a tale,
Apologies in advance…

In a land now known as Petawawa Town,
“There’s a noise heard over there”,
The Algonquins had it right, except that
They were not dreaming of reeds and brass fanfare!

Now the people stand and cheer to hear the tune,
The “Maroon and Grey” go by,
Young and old together,
Any weather,
They pro’bly couldn’t tell you why!

Petawawa Legion, music lovers all,
Had a dream to build a band,
Though they had no players, instruments or stands,
It would be best band in the land!

Dr. Gayfer’s baton beat them into shape,
And now Tanguay leads them all,
If you want a sight,
On a Wednesday night, just
Check inside the Legion Hall!

At the cenotaph,
…oh please don’t laugh…
They’re playing in the snow…

Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa has a band!
Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa’s band is grand!
Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa has a band!
And up and down the Ottawa,
They’re known to take a stand!

Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa has a band!
Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa’s band is grand!
Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa has a band!
Of skill and virtuosity,
You’ll find no bigger fans!

Petawawa! Petawawa! We’re the Petawawa Legion Band!
Petawawa! Petawawa! See us swaggering across the land!
Petawawa! Petawawa! With a paradiddle paradiddle flam!

Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa has a band!
Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa’s band is grand!
Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa has a band!
Precision on the counter-march!
Retreat nev’r looked so grand!

Petawawa! Petawawa! We’re the Petawawa Legion Band!
Petawawa! Petawawa! See us staggering across the land!
Petawawa! Petawawa! With a paradiddle paradiddle flam!

Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa has a band!
Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa’s band is grand!
Petawawa! Petawawa! Petawawa has a band!
If spirit counts for anything,
The BEST BAND IN THE LAND!
